What is backflow?
Backflow is the undesirable reversal of flow in a water system. There are two types of backflow; backsiphonage and backpressure. Backsiphonage is caused by a sudden reduction on the main line pressure, typically caused by a break in the water main or fire hydrant being opened. When these occur, the reduction in pressure will pull water back into the main. Backpressure is usually caused by booster pumps, recirculating pumps, and thermal expansion.
When are backflow assemblies required to be tested?
The backflow assembly must be tested when it is first installed, any time after being serviced, and on an annual basis.
Why must a backflow assembly be tested?
It is important that backflow assemblies are tested to make sure that they are in proper working order. Backflows are mechanical assemblies. Just like anything mechanical they have internal seals, O-rings, springs, and other moving parts that may need repair due to wear and tear, fatigue, and fouling from debris in the water lines.
How long will the test take?
The testing takes only a few minutes. During that time the water will have to be shut off.
What if my backflow assembly fails inspection?
Backflow Specialists LLC has the highly trained and certified technicians that will make the necessary repairs. If a backflow assembly is not repairable, our staff will notify you and quote a price for replacement.
